Britney Jean Spears (born December 2, 1981) is an American recording artist and entertainer. Born in McComb (Mississippi) and raised in Louisiana (Kentwood) by her parents Jamie and Lynne Spears. As a child, Britney Jean Spears started attending dance class and showed tremendous talent in gymnastics, winning many competitions, but had a stronger passion for singing. When she was 8, Britney auditioned for "The All New Mickey Mouse Club" but was not picked due to her age. After performing as the main character in an off-Broadway show, "Ruthless," Britney tried out for "The New Mickey Mouse Club" for a second time and made the cut.
She became a mouseketeer alongside Justin Timberlake, J.C. Chasez, Christiana Aguilera and Ryan Gosling. Her big break into stardom arrived when signed with Jive Records in the late 90s. In early 1999, Britney released her debut single, "(Hit me) Baby One More Time,' which sold 13 million copies and was the top pop hit of the charts for three weeks. Her single gained her worldwide success as well as her controversial music video where the 16 year old is dressed as a sexy Catholic schoolgirl with a bare midriff to top it off. As she toured with the popular boy band NSYNC, her debut album was released and was at the top of the album charts for six weeks.
The album continues to sell millions and is 14x platinum in the US. Britney released her second single "Sometimes" in June 1999 followed closely by her next top 10 hit "Crazy" and "From the Bottom of My Heart." At the end of 1999, Britney had sold over 10 millions copies of her debut album, named the Billboard Top Female Pop Artist, Top New Pop Artist, Top Billaboard 200 album artist, and was nominated for two Grammy awards in early 2000. In 2000, at the age of 18, Britney released her second album "Oops! I did it again" along with the same titled single which topped the charts for 5 weeks. Her other popular singles "Stronger" and "Lucky" were overshadowed with the public's disapproval of her sexually charged message behind the music, especially since she declared she would stay a virgin until she got married and would put on provocative performances at the MTV Movie Awards. Labeled as the "Pop Princess," Britney continued to receive awards and signed a deal with Pepsi-Cola for sponsorship and advertising.
